Alexia Karavela (Athens, 1985) lives & works in Athens.
She studied fine arts at the Department of Plastic Arts & Art Sciences (University of Ioannina, 2002-2007) & in 2015 received a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts. In 2019 she was awarded the ARTWORKS scholarship of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
Working with various media (painting, collage, bricolage), Karavela retrieves and reuses remnants of the recent human past. The lifespan of materials and ideas is juxtaposed with the ever- momentary sense of existence. Her paintings reexamine photographic snapshots of public and private life with reference to naive art, impressionism, expressionism, kitsch and the grotesque.
